Son of the 1973 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Pip Elson. Attended Augusta State University between 1998 and 2002 where he developed into a player who would become a vital cog in the 2001 Walker Cup team who defeated America 15-9. Elson took part in three matches, partnering Richard McEvoy, who won the 2003 Qualifying School, to win one and a half points in their two foursomes matches and took half a point in the final day singles.
